Bango and MMIT Launch M-Iflo

Bango and MMIT have released M-Ifl?, a mobile payment solution aimed at the growing smartphone userbase in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The companies say that, as it stands, these users are unable to pay for apps and digital content on their devices, due to technological limitations and political risks.

“Unfortunately, corruption remains a substantial risk within the mobile money industry in Sub-Saharan Africa,” said Jide Akindele, CEO of MMIT. “This has resulted in a reluctance from the world’s app stores and mobile brands to engage the African market.”

M-Ifl? is a billing mechanism and verification portal which acts as an intermediary between mobile merchants and mobile wallet providers. Those without a mobile wallet account will be able to buy a top-up card at retail outlets, which provides them a code to enter at checkout.

M-Ifl? will initially be available in Kenya and Nigeria, with Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia due to follow shortly. The companies have signed agreements with Kenyas Mobipay and Stanbic IBTC Mobile Money in Nigeria to integrate M-Iflo into their mobile wallets.
