LINE Boasts 280m Users

South Korea’s LINE app, which is now available in 230 countries, has passed the 280m user mark, adding 20m in the last month alone.

It is one of the fastest-growing digital services in the world and may now have more active users than Twitter, which counted more than 200m MAUs in its IPO filing. WhatsApps 350m figure is now in sight for the rival OTT company.

LINE reached 50m users in 399 days, compared to 1,096 days for Twitter and 1,325 for Facebook. It now signs up 63,000 new users per hour, with 7bn messages sent each day. Paul McCartney joined the platform two weeks ago and now has 4.14m followers on LINE, compared to 1.3m on Twitter.

The company, which makes the bulk of its revenue from its games and stickers, also says that 1bn stickers are sent every day. It was reported earlier in the week, prompted by the Asian press, that an IPO is on the horizon for LINE. Its $800m to $1bn valuation comes in just shy of Twitters upcoming $1.6bn expected floatation price.
