Facebook is in talks with Major League Baseball (MLB) to live stream one game per week during the upcoming season – set to get underway on 2 April – as it prepares to conquer the world of live sports.

According to Reuters reports, sources say that Facebook is going after deals with the owners of sports rights to live stream their games – an area which it has dipped its toe in previously with the live streaming of basketball, football and table tennis. It also signed a deal with Univision Communications to live stream 46 matches from Mexican football’s Liga MX, in English, this year.

Facebook and MLB declined comment on the potential deal, however, Reuters’ source suggests that the pair are in ‘advanced’ talks.

Facebook competitor Twitter has also begun venturing into the world of sport live streaming. Last season, it started live streaming National Football League (NFL) games on its platform.

Both platforms seem to be targeting sport to fuel their respective live streaming efforts, as it becomes one of very few types of events that continues to attract large live audiences.
