Uber Cancels Magnum-sponsored Ice Cream Giveaway Following Tragedy

Uber Ice Cream
A message in Ubers app explains why the promotion has been called off

For the past few years, Uber has run its global #UberIceCream event on a Friday in mid-July, adding ice cream deliveries to the services it offers – and, in most locations, offering the frozen snacks for free.

Unilever-owned Magnum has come on board as sponsor of this years promotion in 230 of the 300 cities where it is being run, with UK users able to order a free delivery of four Magnum ice creams.

Friday 15 July was set as the date for this years giveaway – but, at least in the UK, the promotion has been cancelled following yesterdays terror attack in Nice, after a lorry was driven into a crowd celebrating the French national holiday of Bastille Day.

“Now is the time to pause and reflect,” reads an in-app message, “so we are cancelling Uber Ice Cream for today. After last nights tragic events, our thoughts are with the people of France, including our community of riders and drivers in Nice.”
