Under Armour Sportswear Acquires MyFitnessPal

under armour appsSportswear manufacturer Under Armour has acquired fitness tracking platforms Endomondo and MyFitnessPal with the objective of creating the worlds largest digital health and fitness community.

Under Armour, which already owns the MapMyFitness and UA Record suite of applications, is aiming to combine the apps into a connected fitness portfolio which includes more than 120m members globally.

MyFitnessPal boasts 80m registered users and is one of the leading free apps for achieving and maintaining health and fitness goals, providing nutritional information for over five million foods and offering caloric data associated with hundreds of exercises.

Endomondo is an open fitness tracking platform and social fitness network that connects athletes around the world using GPS, enabling users to map, record and share workouts. With 20m users, 80 per cent of whom are outside the US, it provides Under Armour with an international presence.

“Under Armours demonstrated global leadership in health and fitness innovation is greatly enhanced with the addition of Endomondo and MyFitnessPal, as we continue to redefine and elevate the Connected Fitness experience for millions of people around the world,” said Kevin Plank, chairman and CEO of Under Armour. “Similar to to MapMyFitness, Endomondo and MyFitnessPal have established track records of unmatched equity, expertise and passion in the fitness and nutrition space.”

Both companies will continue to operate out of their existing headquarters for the forseeable future. Under Armour did not confirm how much was paid to acquire the two companies, but it is estimated they spent $85m (£55m) on Endomondo and $475 for MyFitnessPal.
