WhatsApp Launches International Video Calling

Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp has launched video calling for its 1bn-plus users on iOS, Android and Windows Phone, as it aims to compete with Apples popular FaceTime application.

The launch of video calling on WhatsApp has been predicted for several months, following consistent reports from consumers who had found beta versions of the feature enabled on their smartphone.

The feature expands on WhatsApps voice calling option, offering video calling as a choice when users initiate a call. While video calling, users can switch between forward-facing and rear cameras.

The addition of video calling brings WhatsApp in line with a number of similar over-the-top offerings like Facebooks own Messenger app, Skype, FaceTime and Viber, and while it is a relatively late entrant to the space, the size of WhatsApps existing audience could still have a significant impact, as could its cross-OS capability.

“Our goal at WhatsApp has always been to help as many people as possible stay in touch with friends, family, and others they care about,” said a WhatsApp spokesperson. “That means making a product thats simple, easy to use, and accessible no matter where you are.

“Were introducing this feature because we know that sometimes voice and text just arent enough. Theres no substitute for watching your grandchild take her first steps, or seeing your daughters face while shes studying abroad. And we want to make these features available to everyone, not just those who can afford the most expensive new phones or live in countries with the best cellular networks.”
