BBC showcases AR and VR series at IAB Digital Upfront event

Viewers will be able to experience the thrill of the Northern Lights in virtual reality in BBC Travels World of Wonder series

BBC Global News, the BBC’s commercially-funded international news platform, has unveiled a new augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) series at an IAB UK Digital Upfront event in London this morning.

The AR series, Inside Design, will run on the BBC Culture online channel, and will delve inside some of most iconic pieces of design from the 20th and 21st centuries and examine the extraordinary engineering behind them. The series aims to deliver on the channel’s mission of giving ‘a fresh take on the things you love’, going beyond the headlines and revealing how these designs were born, from the people who were there, as well as assessing their cultural impact and looking at what they can tell us about the future of technology.

It will use AR to enable audiences to get inside the designs. Viewers will be able to walk around and interact with complex digital models presented in a real world context, with the aim of giving them a deeper understanding of the scale, physicality and elegance of modern masterpieces.

The VR series, World of Wonder, will run on BBC Travel. It will take viewers on a journey into the sights and sounds of amazing natural landmarks, historic sights and cultural curiosities from all over the planet. Viewers will be able to experience the bleak beauty of the Arctic Circle; the thrill of riding on a dog sled; and the mysterious beauty of the Northern lights.
