Coachella has partnered with Square to bring the mobile POS system to the festival site.
During the festival, taking place in California over two weekends later this month, all vendors on-site – from food trucks to merch stands – will be equipped with a Square Reader to accept NFC mobile payments.
Square supports Apple, Android and Samsung Pay, leading the company to suggest "you may not even need to take out your wallet". This being a outdoor festival, however, visitors might not want to rely on phone batteries for all their purchases.
2016 looks to be the year that Coachella truly embraced digital. Last month, it sent out Google Cardboard VR headsets to attendees alongside its wristbands and welcome packs, giving them a chance to virtually visit the festival site and preview some of the performances before they arrive.
