Instagram updates home screen with Reels and shopping tabs

Instagram has redesigned the layout of its home screen, introducing tabs dedicated to its TikTok clone Reels and to shopping.

The Reels tab – which replaces the shortcut to create a new post – provides users with easier access to the app’s short videos, while the 'Shop' tab – which appears where the activity tab used to be – provides quicker access to brands and creators who are selling products. The new post and activity tabs have been shifted to the top right corner of the home screen next to the inbox.

“At Instagram, our focus has always been on young people and creators because they’re trendsetters. Change is happening quickly right now, including how both of these groups use Instagram and engage with the world,” said Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, in a blog post. “This year, with the pandemic and much of the world sheltering in place, we’ve seen an explosion in short, entertaining videos on Instagram. We’ve also seen an incredible amount of shopping move online, with more and more people buying online and young people looking to their favourite creators for recommendations on what to buy.”
