O2 has been in touch to report that Wednesday was its biggest SMS day of the year so far, with the exception of New Years Day. Traffic peaked after the Champions League final in which Chelsea lost to Man United on penalties. Prior to this, the day with the highest amount of texts sent was 30 April, when Chelsea played Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final.
O2 wonders whether the spikes suggest that a large proportion of O2 customers are Chelsea fans, but weve got a feeling the vast majority of those texts on Wednesday would have been sent by Man U fans. Chelsea fans are more likely to have been on the receiving end.
Unfortunately for O2, and all the other UK mobile networks, texting activity among UK-based football fans is unlikely to reach record levels during Euro 2008, which kicks off in a couple of weeks, with England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland all restricted to just a watching brief.
