fifty shades of grey fandangoCinema ticketing site Fandango broke records this weekend, with 65 per cent of tickets sold on mobile devices, its largest percentage ever, driven by the long weekend in America and the release of Fifty Shades of Grey.

The previous record holder, Transformers: Age of Extinction, saw 61 per cent of tickets sold on mobile devices when it was released at the end of June last year. The films target radically different demographics, and seem to indicate that mobile ticketing is on the rise with all audiences across the board.

Fandango also saw its largest ever share of weekend movie ticket sales in its 15 year history, with 29 per cent of all tickets for Fifty Shades of Grey bought via its apps or desktop and mobile websites.

The controversial romantic drama, which took in a projected $85m (£55.1m) at the US box office over the three-day weekend, also broke Fandango records for most tickets sold on Valentines Day and the top selling R-rated movie debut, based on pre-sales through its opening weekend.

“Fandango played an important role in helping moviegoers see Fifty Shades on the big screen this weekend, and a strong slate of diverse movies for different audiences” said Paul Yanover, president of Fandango. “Fandangos record box office share demonstrates that online and mobile ticketing is becoming a habit and a welcome convenience for consumers wanting to plan the perfect movie night.”
