MWC: Facebook Launches Pay Dialog

Facebook is launching a Pay Dialog billing system which can be integrated into mobile web apps, CTO Bret Taylor announced in his MWC keynote speech. As long as a users device is with a partnered carrier – a list which already includes Orange, Vodafone, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, and Teléfonica – they will be able to make mCommerce transactions in three steps, including an SMS receipt.

The move is intended to provide an easy-to-use solution for the mobile web, which Taylor said was “just broken for end users”, and lagged behind native apps. Supporting the mobile web was the theme of the day – understandably, given that it announced that more people access the social network using the mobile web than from all of its native apps combined.

Facebook announced it would be joining 30 manufacturers, carriers and developers in the W3C Mobile Web Platform Core Community Group, aimed at improving standardisation of mobile browsers.

Facebook has also released a mobile browser test suite, Ringmark, which it will donate to the W3C group. Ringmark, developed with Bocoup, is designed to show developers what functionality is supported by various browsers.
