Drivers for companies from the UK, Netherlands and Sweden - including DHL, DSV, Van Swieten Air Cargo, Byrknes Auto, Nestle and GTO Group - have been trialling North Sea Freight Intelligent Transport Solutions (NS FRITS), a new mobile app. Available on an Android phone or tablet, the app provides important information, in a variety of languages, to drivers – including the location of secure parking locations, low bridges and crime hotspots - using mobile, GPRS and satellite technology.
The trials are being led by the Netherlands National Police Agency (KLPD), Humberside Police and Volvo Technology Corporation in their respective countries. The €4.9m (£4.2m) project is being delivered by a group of public and private sector organisations, including Volvo, Avanti Communications, the University of Hull and the University of Huddersfield.
Drivers and transport managers have used the system during their normal working day and provided feedback about the system and the impact it had on their working lives. The results of the trial will be revealed on 23 November at the NS FRITS conference in Brussels.
