Oral-B Updates Smart Brush App to Communicate with Dentists

tooth comboUsers of Oral-Bs toothbrushing app which pairs with a Bluetooth-connected toothbrush will now be able to receive direct feedback and recommendations from dentists and hygienists based on their brushing habits.

The update to the Procter & Gamble companys app was unveiled at MWC 2015 in Barcelona, along with the news that that app has been downloaded almost 300,000 times since its launch last year.

The app aims to encourage users to brush longer and with less force, which is more in line with dental professionals recommendations. The update will enable the app to share users brushing data with their dentist, and allow dentists and hygienists to provide feedback and advice tailored to the individual in return.

As well as providing real-time feedback on brushing technique, advising users to reduce pressure or focus on a different area, for example, the app also helps maintain users attention and motivation while in use by providing news headlines, weather for the upcoming week and other information.

The app has seen great success in improving users oral hygiene, with users average brush time up to two minutes 24 seconds, compared to less than a minute for manual toothbrush users. Procter & Gamble plan on releasing the apps API in October, with an accompanying SDK to let developers introduce additional content to the app.
