Oreo celebrates its 105th birthday by flying drones above New York as part of Dunk Challenge

Mondelez International cookie brand Oreo celebrated its 105th birthday by flying cookie-shaped drones around the New York skyline.

The marketing stunt, dubbed the ‘Drone Dunk’, was all part of the brand’s ongoing Dunk Challenge campaign. It saw the drones dressed up in cookie costumes flying over the East River and dropping cookies into cups of milk setup on a barge alongside the river.

AdWeek reports that, according to a statement from the brand, the cookies were dropped from the same height as the Statue of Liberty – that’s 305 feet in the air.

Oreo has been encouraging people to show off their dunking skills as part of its latest campaign – fronted by the likes of Christina Aguilera, Shaquille O’Neal and Neymar – enabling fans in the US to share these skills on Instagram and Twitter using the #OreoDunkSweepstakes hashtag for the chance to win a ‘VIP experience in New York or Los Angeles.

It also recently teamed with Google to create a digital dunk challenge accessed by scanning an original Oreo cookie through a smartphone.
