Spotify and Starbucks Sign Deal to Let Customers Influence Playlist

Spotify in StarbucksA few months after ending its tradition of selling CDs at its branches, Starbucks has made a deal with music streaming service Spotify to provide the soundtrack in its branches, with both employees and customers able to influence what music is played.

The partnership links together Starbucks immensely popular loyalty program with Spotifys music ecosystem, giving My Starbucks Reward members unique access to to the brands presence on Spotify.

“For over forty years, music has played a vital role in Starbucks Third Place experience – inspiring our partners and customers in unexpected ways that have helped to shape the global pop culture,” said Howard Schultz, chairman and CEO of Starbucks. “By connecting Spotifys world-class streaming platform into our world-class store and digital ecosystem, we are reinventing the way our millions of global customers discover music.”

The partnership will be initially rolled out in US branches, followed by locations in Canada and the UK. 150,000 US employees will receive free Spotify Premium subscriptions (along with an unspecified number of UK and Canadian employees), enabling them to use dedicated tools within Spotify to influence the playlists in their store and beyond.

In return, Spotify users will be able to obtain Stars as Currency for the My Starbucks Reward program, representing the first time that the loyalty program stars will be accessed by a third party. Spotify will also create a dedicated section for new playlists from Starbucks, including the most popular tracks that have been played in branches over the past 20 years, which will be available to all Spotify users.
