Spotify Hits 40m Active Users, 10m Paid Subscribers

Spotify iOS AppSpotify has revealed that its music streaming service now has more than 40m active users, 10m of whom are paid subscribers.

Spotify doesnt break out how many of these users are mobile, but its worth noting that its iOS and Android apps only became available to non-premium users last December, in a limited shuffle-only version.

Spotify says it has paid over $1bn (£600m) to music rights holders since 2008. By comparison, consumer spend on music subscription services in 2013 alone, also including the likes of Deezer and Pandora, was estimated to be just under $2bn, according to Futuresource research – a figure that notably doesnt include ad revenues from non-subscribers.

Thats equivalent to 10 per cent of the total music market. Futuresource predicts that this share will rise to 30 per cent by 2017, or $5bn.

“We’ve had an amazing year, growing from 20 to 56 markets as people from around the world embrace streaming music,” said Spotify CEO and founder Daniel Ek. “We’re widening our lead in the digital music space and will continue to focus on getting everyone in the world to listen to more music.”
