Vodafone Launching £70 Smartphone

Vodafone has revealed the Smart II, its low-cost Android handset aimed at those consumers who are still put off buying a smartphone by the price barrier.

The phone will run Android 2.3 – aka Gingerbread – with a 800Mhz processor and 512MB of RAM. It also boasts a 3.2” HVGA display and 3.2 megapixel camera.

“The Smart II is one of the most important devices we have ever introduced,” says Patrick Chomet, group terminals director at Vodafone. “It delivers a level of performance, functionality and quality that is traditionally the preserve of high-end smartphones – but at an exceptionally affordable price. We believe the Smart II could represent a tipping point in the evolution of the market, bringing a new wave of consumers to the world of smartphones for the first time.”

The Smart II will launch initially in the UK, priced at £70, and will follow across other European markets where Vodafone has a presence, at a sub-€99 price point.
