Walmart pilots mobile checkout scheme at Lawn & Garden Centers

Walmart is testing a mobile checkout system called Check Out With Me in the Lawn & Garden Centers of more than 350 of its stores across the US. Lawn & Garden associates at these select stores are equipped with mobile devices to scan product barcodes and Bluetooth printers to print out receipts, enabling customers to checkout without having to go through the checkout inside the stores.

The choice of this type of outlet to trial the system makes a lot of sense, enabling customers to load up their trolley with items such as soil and plants – typically displayed outside – pay one of the roving cashiers, and then head directly to their car to get the goods home.

In a blog post, WalMart described Check Out With Me as “the latest example of our commitment to deliver a more convenient shopping experience that saves our customers time”, adding that it would be listening to its customers and working on ways to bring their expectations to life during the course of the trial.
